Signs Your Roof Is Past Its Shelf Life

September 19, 2017

More often than not, a roof can surpass its shelf life without experiencing total failure. For this reason, many homeowners fail to even notice that their roof has gone bad. Sure, they notice a leak or two here and there, or even notice that their roof is missing a few (okay, a lot of) shingles, but they don’t associate those signs with a completely failed roof. However, those are signs of a roof gone bad, and signs that a roof replacement is in order. Whether you’re unsure if your roof needs to be replaced or you know that your roof needs to be replaced, reach out to a roofing contractor in Salt Lake City for a roof evaluation and estimate.

Potential Signs Of A Roof Gone Bad

While a professional can give you an accurate assessment of the state of your roof, if you want to double check just to be certain, look for the following signs:

  • Cracked shingles
  • Bald spots where shingles have gone missing
  • Shingle granules in your gutters
  • Leaks and cracks in your ceiling
  • Water damage
  • Curled shingles
  • Moss
  • Dark streaks (caused by algae and moss)

Some other not-so-obvious signs to look for include:

Your Neighbors Are Having Their Roofs Replaced: Chances are that the homes in your neighborhood are all around the same age. If your neighbors are having their roofs replaced, it’s probably time that you contact a roofing contractor in Salt Lake City to have yours replaced as well.

Your Home is At Least 20 Years Old: In general, roofs should be replaced every 15 or 20 years, so if your home is in its mid- to late-20s, chances are that the roof has surpassed its useful life.

If you notice any of the above signs, don’t delay in having your roof replaced. While it may be a large investment now, it is a worthwhile one, as the damage caused by a failing roof can be much greater and more expensive than a roof replacement. Reach out to a roofing contractor in Salt Lake City for an assessment of your roof and an estimate of what it will cost to replace it.
